THE BOOK OF 1 THESSALONIANS CHAPTER 1

I. THE DUTY OF A CHRISTIAN: VS 1-5

A. These are the blessings of a Christian. v 1 1. A Christian is in God. Acts 17:28, Phil. 2:13 2. A disciple is in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17, Gal. 2:20 B. These are the successes of his life. v 2 1. A Christian believes in the power of prayer. Luke 18:1-7 2. A saint is thankful for his blessings. James 1:17 C. These are the services which he gives unto God. v 3 1. A Christian excels in his work of faith. Heb. 11:6, Rev. 14:13 2. A saint is dedicated to his labor of love. 1 Cor. 13:4-8 3. A disciple endures in his patience of hope. Heb. 6:18-19 D. These are the achievements of his life. v 5 1. A disciple knows the value of his election. 1 Peter 2:10 2. A Christian understands the power of the gospel. Romans 1:16, Heb. 4:12

II. THE FAITHFULNESS OF THE THESSALONIANS: VS 6-10

A. This was the reasons for their faithfulness. v 6 1. The Thessalonians had received the word of God. 1 Peter 2:1-3 2. Christians have received the word of God. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 B. This was the nature of their faithfulness. vs 7-8 1. The Thessalonians were examples for other Christians to follow. vs 7-8 2. Christians should be an example for other people to follow us. 1 Peter 3:1-2, 1 Tim. 4:12 C. These are the results of their faithfulness. vs 9-10 1. The Thessalonians were serving the living God. v 9, Deut. 10:12 2. The Thessalonians were patient under persecutions. v 10, James 1:2-5

CHAPTER 2

I. THE PREACHING OF PAUL: VS 1-6

A. This was the reason for his preaching. v 1 1. The preaching of Paul was not in vain. 2 Tim. 4:6-8 2. Our preaching will not be in vain. Isa. 55:6-7, Rev. 2:10 B. These were the characteristics of his preaching. v 2-4 1. Paul was bold in his preaching. v 2, 1 Cor. 2:1-5 2. Paul preached the truth. v 3, 2 Tim. 4:1-4 3. Paul preached to please God. v 4, Acts 5:24-29 C. This was the effect of his preaching. vs 5-6 1. God was his witness. vs 5-6 2. God should be our witness. 1 Peter 4:11

II. THE GODLY LIFE OF PAUL: VS 7-12

A. These were the traits of his life. vs 7-10 1. Paul was gentle among them. v 7, Eph. 4:30-31 2. Paul loved them. v 8, 1 Peter 4:22 3. Paul was an example unto them. vs 9-10, 1 Cor. 11:1, 1 Peter 2:20-24 B. These were the blessings of his life. v 11 1. Paul exhorted them to greater services. Heb. 10:25 2. Paul was comforting to them. 1 Thess. 5:11 3. Paul charged them to be faithful. 1 Tim. 5:21 C. This was the purpose of his life. v 12 1. Paul walked worthy of the Lord. v 12, 2 Tim. 1:13 2. Christians should walk worthy of the Lord. Eph. 5:3

III. THE MINISTRY OF PAUL: VS 13-20

A. These were the characteristics of his ministry. v 13 1. Paul was thankful for his blessings. Heb. 13:15 2. Paul preached the truth of God. John 17:17 B. This was the blessings of his ministry. v 14 1. Paul converted many people to the truth. Acts 9:10-16 2. Christians should convert many people to the truth. Matt. 28:18-20 C. These were the successes of his ministry. vs 15-16 1. Paul overcame many persecution. v 15, Heb. 4:14-16 2. Paul overcame many obstacles. v 16, Romans 8:37 D. This was the hinderance to his ministry. vs 17-20 1. Satan was his enemy. vs 17-20 2. Satan is our enemy. 1 Peter 5:7-8, 2 Cor. 11:13-15

CHAPTER 3

I. BEING PERSECUTED: VS 1-5

A. These are the ways to endure our persecutions. vs 1-2 1. Disciples must be established in the faith. 2 Cor. 5:16-18 2. Christians must be comforted by our faith. John 14:1-3 B. These are the characteristics of our persecutions. v 3 1. Disciples can have metal persecutions. 1 Peter 4:12-14 2. Christians will have social persecutions. 1 Peter 4:1-4 3. Saints could have bodily persecutions. Rev. 2:10 C. These are the reasons for our persecutions. vs 4-5 1. Christians must suffer persecutions for being a Christian. v 4, 2 Tim. 3:12 2. Disciples will be tempted by the Devil. v 5, Gen. 3:1, 1 Peter 5:8

II. OVERCOMING OUR PERSECUTIONS: VS 6-13

A. These are the ways to overcome our persecutions. vs 6-7 1. Christians must have the proper faith in God. v 6, Gal. 5:6 2. Brethren can be comforted by other Christians. v 7, James 5:11 B. There are the requirements for overcome our persecutions. vs 8-9 1. Christians must be steadfast in the Lord. v 8, Eph. 6:10-12 2. Disciples should maintain spiritual joy. v 9, 1 Peter 1:8 3. Saints need to continue to pray for spiritual help. v 10, Isa. 41:10 C. There are the blessings of our persecutions. vs 11-13 1. Christians can receive spiritual guidance for their persecutions. v 11, Psa. 27:11 2. Disciples will grow spiritually by their persecutions. v 12, 2 Cor. 4:16-18 3. Saints can become spiritually perfected by their persecutions. v 13, 1 Peter 5:10

CHAPTER 4

I. BEING HOLY: VS 1-8

A. These are the needs for our holiness. v 1 1. Christians are commanded to be holy. 1 Peter 1:15-16 2. Disciples are exhorted to be holy. Romans 12:1-2 B. These are the reasons for our being holy. v 2 1. The laws of God demands our holiness. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 2. The laws of Christ commands us to be holy. Col. 3:16-17 C. These are the ways by which we are to be holy. vs 3-8 1. Disciples are to abstain from unlawful sexual activities. vs 3-5, Matt. 5:28 2. Christians must not defraud their brother. vs 6-7, Matt. 5:40 D. These would be the effects of our holiness. v 8 1. Christians would be obeying the laws of God. Eccles. 12:13-14 2. Disciples would not be resisting the laws of God. Acts 6:39

II. BROTHERLY LOVE: VS 9-12

A. These are the reasons for brotherly love. v 9 1. Love is the greatest commandment. Matt. 22:36-40 2. Love proves that we are the disciples of Christ. John 13:13-15 B. These are the mandates for brotherly love. v 10 1. Christians must increase their love. 1 John 3:14-16 2. Brethren should love each other fervently. 1 Peter 1:22 C. These are the effects of brotherly love. vs 11-12 1. Christians would be working effectively. v 11, Eccles. 9:10 2. Disciples would be walking honestly. v 12, Romans 12:11

III. OUR OWN IMMORTALITY: VS 13-18

A. These are the reasons for our own immortality of life. v 13 1. Disciples are promised immortality. Romans 2:7 2. Christians believe in the promises of their own immortality of life. 2 Cor. 5:1-2 B. These are the requirements for receiving our own immortality of life. v 14 1. Christians must believe in the resurrection of Christ. Rev. 1:18 2. Disciples should believe in the resurrection of the dead. John 5:28-30 C. These are the proofs of our own immortality of life. v 15 1. Our immortality is based upon the word of God. 2 Tim. 1:10 2. Our immortality is based upon the resurrection of Christ. Acts 17:30-31 D. These are the assurances of our own immortality of life. vs 16-17 1. Christians must put on their own immortality of life. 1 Cor. 15:50-57 2. Disciples must live eternally with their Lord. John 14:1-3 E. These are the effects of our own immortality of life. v 18 1. Our immortality of life is comforting words. 1 Cor. 15:49 2. Our immortality of life is the greatest reward. James 1:12

CHAPTER 5

I. THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST: VS 1-7

A. This will be the manner of His coming. vs 1-3 1. Our Lord will come as a thief in the night. vs 1-2, Rev. 16:15 2. Some people will be unprepared for His coming. v 3, Matt. 24:38-39 B. These are the instructions for His coming. vs 4-5 1. The second coming of Christ should not catch us unprepared to meet Him. vs 4-5, Heb. 2:1-4 2. Christians have been given spiritual enlightenment concerning Christ. Eph. 1:18 C. These are the ways to prepare for His coming. vs 6-7 1. Disciples should be watchful. v 6, Rev. 3:11 2. Saints must be sober. v 6, 1 Peter 5:8 3. Christians need to put off the works of darkness. v 7, Romans 13:12

II. THE SONS OF LIGHT: VS 8-11

A. These are the requirements for being a son of light. v 8 1. A brother in Christ must be sober. 1 Peter 1:13 2. A Christian should put on the breast plate of faith. Mark 9:23-24 3. A disciple need to put on the breast plate of love. 1 John 5:3 4. A saint ought to put on the helmet of hope. Romans 8:24 B. These are the reasons for being a son of light. vs 9-10 1. Christians are the heirs of salvation. v 9, 2 Peter 1:3-5 2. Disciples are living for the Lord. V 10, Heb. 13:5-6 C. These would be the results of being a son of light. v 11 1. Christians would be spiritually comforted. John 14:1-3 2. Disciples would be spiritually edified. Acts 20:32

III. OUR DUTIES TOWARD ELDERS: VS 12-13

A. A disciple should know the elders. v 12, 1 Peter 5:1-5 B. A Christian is to honor the elders. v 13, 1 Tim. 5:17

IV. OUR FAITHFULNESS: VS 14-24

A. These are the requirements for our being faithful. vs 14-15 1. Disciples are to warn the unruly. v 14, 1 Tim. 1:10 2. Brethren must comfort the feeble-minded. v 14, Romans 14:1 3. Members of the church should support the weak. v 15, Romans 15:1 4. Saints need to be patient toward all men. v 15, Gal. 6:10 5. Christians ought to follow that which is good. v 15, Matt. 5:14-16

B. These are the ways to be faithful. vs 16-22 1. Brethren should rejoice evermore. v 16, Luke 10:17 2. Members of the church must be prayerful. v 17, Matt. 28:41 3. Disciples should be thankful v 18, Psa. 50:14 4. Christians ought not to grieve the Holy Spirit. v 19, Eph. 5:30 5. Saints should not despise the prophecy of the scriptures. v 20, Col. 3:16- 17 6. Brethren must prove all things. v 21, Matt. 22:29 7. Members of the church need to abstain from evil. v 22, James 4:7-8 C. These are the blessings of our faithfulness. vs 23-24 1. God will sustain our lives. v 23, Jude 24-25 2. God can not lie. v 24, Heb. 6:16-18

V. PAUL'S SALUTATION: VS 25-28

A. Paul needed their prayers. v 25 B. Paul wanted brethren to greet one another. v 26 C. Paul desired this letter to be read. v 27 D. Paul wanted the Lord to be with them. v 28
