MATTHEW CHAPTER 21

I. THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY OF JESUS INTO JERUSALEM: VS 1-11 

A. This was the preparation which was made for His entrance into Jerusalem. vs 1-3 (Jesus would ride into Jerusalem upon a donkey.)  B. This was the purpose of His entrance into Jerusalem. v 4 (This entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem would fulfilled the Old Testament Prophecies.) Isa. 62:11, Zech. 9:9  C. This was the obedience which was given for His entrance into Jerusalem. vs 6-8 (The people prepared the way for Jesus to enter into Jerusalem.)  D. This was the welcome which Jesus received for that entrance into Jerusalem. vs 8-9 (The multitude of people cried, "Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest  E. This was the concern for His entrance into Jerusalem. vs 10-11 (The people of Jerusalem asked, "Who is this"?) II. JESUS CLEANSED THE TEMPLE: VS 12-17  A. This was His zeal in cleaning the temple. v 12 (Jesus drove out those people who had polluted the temple.)  B. This was His reason for cleaning the temple. v 13 (Those people had made the temple of God a den of thieves.) Isa. 56:7  C. This was His power in cleaning the temple. vs 14-16  1. Jesus healed the sick people who came unto Him in the temple. v 14  2. The chief priests and scribes rebuke Jesus for the praises which He was receiving form the young people whom He had healed. vs 15-16 (Jesus said, "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?") Psa. 8:2  D. This was His departure from cleaning the temple. v 17 (Jesus departed from the temple.) III. THE CURSING OF THE BARREN FIG TREE: VS 18-22  A. This was the expectation of the barren fig tree. vs 18-19 (That fig tree was expected to produce fruit.)  B. This was the disappointment of the barren fig tree. v 19 (That fig tree had no fruit on it.)  C. This was the curse of the barren fig tree. v 19 (That fig tree withered away.)  D. This was the astonishment of the barren fig tree. v 20 (The disciples wondered how that fig tree could wither away so quickly.)  E. These were the results of the barren figure. vs 21-22  1. Jesus revealed the need for faith. v 21, 1 John 5:4  2. Jesus explained the power of prayer. v 22, 1 Thess. 5:17 IV. JESUS EXPLAINED HIS AUTHORITY: VS 23-27  A. These were the questions which were ask concerning His authority. v 23 (The chief priests and the elders of the people asked Jesus, "By what authority doest thou these things? Who gave you this authority?")  B. This was the answer which were given concerning His authority. vs 24-25  1. Jesus revealed that He would answer their question providing that they would answer His question. v 24  2. The baptism of John, "Was it from heaven or of men?" v 24  C. This was the trouble which they had in answering the question of Jesus. vs 25-27  1. If they had said, the baptism of John was from heaven, Jesus would have ask: why didn't you believe him? v 25  2. If they had said, the baptism of John was from men: they would have fear the people for all the people believe that John was a prophet. vs 25-26  D. This was their answer to Jesus concerning the baptism of John. v 27 (They said, "We can not tell.")  E. This was their rebuke for asking about His authority. v 27 (Jesus said, "Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.") V. THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS. VS 28-32  A. The was the first son. vs 28-29  1. He was called. v 28, Matt. 11:28-30  2. This was his attitude. v 29 a). The first son professed stubbornness. Eph. 2:1-3  b). The first son practiced obedience. Romans 6:16-18  B. This was the second Son. v 30  1. He was called. v 30, Rev. 22:17  2. This was his attitude. v 30 a). The second son professed obedience. Romans 10:1-3  b). The second son practiced disobedience. Heb. 3:13  C. This was the application of the two sons. vs 31-32  1. The sinners would be the first son. Acts 2:38-41  2. The self-righteous would imply the second son. Matt. 5:20 VI. THE PARABLE OF THE WICKED HUSBANDMEN: VS 32-46  A. The Jewish Nation had been established by God. v 33, Gen. 12:1-3  B. God expected the fruit of righteousness from the Jewish people. vs 34-39  1. The Israelites had failed to produce the fruits of righteousness. v 34  2. The Israelites had stoned the prophets. vs 35-36  3. The Israelites had rejected Jesus. vs 37-39  C. God would destroy the Jewish Nation. vs 40-46  1. The Jewish people were accountable unto God. vs 40-41  2. The Jewish people were rejected by God. vs 42-44  3. The Jewish people became very angry. vs 45-46 CHAPTER 22 

I. THE PARABLE OF THE MARRIAGE FEAST: VS 1-14 

A. This parable would symbolize the establishment of the church. vs 1-2  B. The first call was to the Jewish people. v 3, Acts 2:1-47, Romans 1:16  1. The Israelites rejected the gospel of Christ as a nation. v 3, Romans 10:1- 3 a). The Jewish people began to persecute Christians. vs 4-6, Acts 8:1-4  b). The Jewish people would be punished as a nation because Jerusalem was destroyed by the Roman Armies in A. D. 70. v 7  2. The second call was to the Gentiles people. vs 8-10, Acts 10:1-48, Rev. 22:17  C. This was the judgment of the world. vs 11-14  1. There will be a judgment of the world. v 11, 2 Cor. 5:10 a). There will be some people who will be unprepared to meet God. vs 11-12, John 5:28-29  b). There will be some people who will be prepared to meet God. v 13, Romans 2:7  2. These are the reasons for being unprepared to meet God. v 14 (Many are called, but few are chosen.) II. GOD AND CAESAR: VS 15-22  A. This was the wicked plot. v 15 (The Pharisees want to trap Jesus with a question.)  B. This was the wicked flattery. v 16 (They praised Jesus for being fair with every person.)  C. This was the question which was asked. v 17 (They asked, "Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?")  D. This was the subtle answer which was given. vs 18-21  1. Christians must render their duty to their God. Matt. 6:33  2. Disciples must render their duty to their country. Romans 13:1-7 III. THE SADDUCEES ARE CONFOUNDED: VS 23-33  A. These were their religious errors. vs 23-28  1. The Sadducees possessed false beliefs. v 23  2. The Sadducees had vain interpretations. v 24  3. The Sadducees revealed vain reasoning. vs 25-28  B. These were the causes of their religious errors. v 29  1. The Sadducees did not know the word of God.  2. The Sadducees did not understand the power of God.  C. These were the answers to the question which they asked. vs 30-32  1. The power of God was explained unto them. v 30  2. The word of God was revealed unto them. vs 31-32  D. This was their astonishment. v 33 (They were astonished at His doctrine.) IV. THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS: VS 34-40  A. This was the tempting question which was asked. vs 34-36 (A certain lawyer asked Jesus a tempting question, "Master what is the great commandment in the law?")  B. This was the truthful answer to the question which was asked. vs 37-39  1. The first commandment is our duty to God. vs 34-38 a). The heart is the seat of the will. Prov. 23:7  b). The soul is the seat of the life. 2 Cor. 4:16, Heb. 10:38-39  c). The mind is the seat of the intellect. Prov. 4:23  2. The second commandment is duty to one's neighbor, and duty to one's self. v 39, Romans 13:8, Romans 12:3  C. These were the purposes of those commandments. vs 40 (Those commandments fulfill the laws of God.) 1 John 5:2-3, Romans 13:9- 10 V. THE INESCAPABLE QUESTION: VS 41-46  A. This was the question which was asked. vs 41-42 (Jesus asked the Pharisees, "What think ye of Christ? Whose son is he?")  B. This was the answer which was given. v 42 (The Pharisees said unto Jesus that Christ was the son of David.)  C. This was truth which was revealed. vs 43-45  1. Jesus was the fleshy son of David. Romans 1:1-4  2. Jesus was the Divine Son of God. John 3:16  D. This was the results. v 46 (No person asked Jesus any more questions.) CHAPTER 23 

I. THE INCONSISTENCIES OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES: VS 1-12 

A. This was their ambition. vs 1-2 (The scribes and Pharisees wanted to be greater than other people.)  B. These were their false profession. vs 3-7  1. The scribes and Pharisees were religious talkers. Matt. 15:8-9  2. The scribes and Pharisees were converted to ceremonialism. Acts 15:10  3. The scribes and Pharisees were ostentation in their appearances. Luke 18:11-12  4. The scribes and Pharisees were ambition in their manner of life. Romans 10:1-3  C. These were their self-exaltations. vs 8-12  1. The scribes and Pharisees thought that they were exalted with Christ. James 3:1  2. The scribes and Pharisees thought that they were above their brethren. James 2:9  3. The scribes and Pharisees thought that they were exalted with God. Romans 12:3 II. THESE WERE THE WOES WHICH WERE PRONOUNCED UPON THEIR HYPOCRISY: VS 13-32  A. The scribes and Pharisees were stumbling-blocks to other people. v 13, Act 15:10  B. The scribes and Pharisees practiced extortion on other people. v 14, Gal. 6:6-9  C. The scribes and Pharisees had evil zeal which they manifested. v 15, Romans 10:1-3  D. The scribes and Pharisees had false schemes which they used on other people. vs 16-22  E. The scribes and Pharisees practiced formalism in their worship to God. vs 23-24, Matt. 15:8-9  F. The scribes and Pharisees had evil hearts. vs 25-26, Heb. 3:12-13  G. The scribes and Pharisees were depraved concerning their sins. vs 27-28, Luke 11:47  H. The scribes and Pharisees were sanctimoniously in their religion. vs 29-32, 1 Thess. 2:15-16 III. THESE WERE THE PUNISHMENTS FOR THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES: VS 33-39  A. This was their denunciation. v 33 (The scribes and Pharisees could not escape the judgment of God.) Heb. 2:1-4  B. This was the reason. v 34 (The scribes and Pharisees rejected the teachings of the prophets.)  C. These were the punishments which would be rendered. vs 35-39  1. The scribes and Pharisees would be punished in the fires of hell in that coming world. Matt. 10:28  2. The scribes and Pharisees would suffer misery in this life. Romans 2:9 CHAPTER 24 

I. THE DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE IS FORETOLD: VS 1-2 (Jesus said that the temple would be completely destroyed.) 

II. THE TWO-FOLD QUESTIONS: V 3 

A. When would the temple be destroyed?  B. When would the world come to an end? III. THESE ARE THE ANSWERS IN REFERENCE TO THE TEMPLE BEING DESTROYED: VS 4-28  A. These would be the first signs before the destruction of the temple. vs 4-14  1. There would be the coming of false Christs. vs 4-5  2. There would be rumor of woes. v 6  3. There would be the disturbances of nature. vs 7-8  4. There would be the outbreak of persecution. vs 9-14  B. This would be the signs for the flight from Jerusalem. vs 15-22  1. The Romans Armies would surround the City of Jerusalem. v 15  2. These were the warning. vs 16-28 a). They were to flee into the mountains. v 16  b). They were to leave their possessions behind. vs 17-20  c). There would be great persecutions. vs 21-22  d). They were not to be deceived by false doctrines concerning the destruction of Jerusalem. vs 23-28 IV. THESE ARE THE ANSWERS IN REFERENCE TO THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST (THE END OF THE WORLD): VS 29-51  A. These were the descriptions of the second coming of Christ. vs 29-31  1. The time of His coming is uncertain. v 29, 2 Peter 3:4-9  2. The manner of His coming will be in glory and power. v 30, Rev. 1:18  3. The elect people of God will be gather from the earth. v 31  B. These are the assurances of the second coming of Christ. vs 32-35  1. The second coming of Christ will be a future even. vs 32-33  2. The second coming of Christ will be at the end of the Christian dispensation. v 34, 1 Cor. 15:24-28  3. The second coming of Christ will be a reality. v 35, Acts 17:30-31  C. These are the characteristics of the second coming of Christ. vs 36-41  1. The time of His coming is a secret. v 36  2. These will be the conditions of people when He come. vs 37-41 a). Some people will be unprepared for His coming. vs 37-38  b). Some people will be unaware of His coming. v 39  c). There will be that final separation of the righteous and unrighteous at His coming. vs 40-41  D. These were the instructions for the second coming of Christ. vs 42-51  1. Christians must be prepared for His coming. v 42  2. Disciples ought to be prudent concerning His coming. vs 43-44  3. Saints need to be faithful until He come. v 45, Rev. 2:10  4. Brethren should be blessed at His coming. vs 46-51 a). The righteous will be rewarded eternal life. v 47  b). The wicked will be rewarded eternal punishment. vs 48-51 CHAPTER 25 

I. THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS: VS 1-13 

A. This is the accountability of humanity. v 1 (Each person must appear before the judgment seat of Christ.) 2 Cor. 5:10  B. This will be the condition of humanity. v 2  1. Some people will be wise. Amos 4:12  2. Some people will be foolish. Psa. 14:1  C. These are the reasons for those conditions. vs 3-4  1. The unwise people are neglecting to accept the terms of salvation. v 3, Heb. 2:1-4  2. The wise people are obedient to the terms of the gospel system. v 4, Acts 2:38, Matt. 5:14-16  D. These are the summons for humanity. vs 5-6  1. Our Lord's return may be delayed. v 5, 2 Peter 3:8-9  2. Our Lord's return is certain. v 6, 2 Peter 3:10  E. These will be the rewards for humanity. vs 7-12  1. The unwise persons will be shut out of heaven. a). They will want to enter. Matt. 7:21-23  b). They will try to enter.  c). They will cry to enter.  2. The wise persons will be secure in heaven. Romans 2:7  F. This is the admonition for humanity. v 13 (All persons should watch because they do not know when the Son of man will come.) II. THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS: VS 14-30  A. These were the gifts of the talents. vs 14-15  1. One person was given five talents according to his ability.  2. One person was given two talents according to his capacity.  3. One person was given one talent according to his aptitude.  B. These were the works of the talents. vs 16-18  1. The five talented person went out and made five other talents. v 16  2. The two talented person went out and made two other talents. v 17  3. The one talented person went out and hid his talent. v 18  C. This was the responsibility of the talents. v 19 (The lord of those servants came and reckoned with them.)  D. These were the rewards of the talents. vs 20-30  1. The workers were blessed. vs 20-23 a). The five talented person was blessed because he had gained five other talents. vs 20-21  b). The two talented person was blessed because he had gained two other talents. vs 22-23  2. The slothful person was cursed. vs 24-30 a). The lord did not accept his excuses. vs 24-27  b). The lord passed his sentence upon him. vs 28-29  c). The lord allowed that person to be punished. v 30 III. THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST: VS 31-46  A. This will be the manner of the second coming of Christ. v 31 (The Son of man will come with all of His holy angels so that He can sit upon the throne of His glory.)  B. These will be the events of the second coming of Christ. vs 32-33  1. The sheep (the righteous) will be put on the right hand.  2. The goats (the sinners) will be put on the left hand.  C. These will be the proclamations which will be given concerning the second coming of Christ. vs 34-45  1. These will be proclamations for the saints. vs 35-40 "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of world." a). I was hungry, and you feed me. v 35  b). I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. v 35  c). I was a stranger, and ye took me in. v 35  d). I was naked, and you clothed me. v 36  e). I was sick, and ye visited me. v 36  f). I was in prison, and ye came unto me. v 36  2. These will be the proclamations for the sinners. vs 41-45 "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." a). I was hungry and you gave me no meat. v 42  b). I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink. v 42  c). I was a stranger, and ye took me not in. v 43  d). I was a naked, and ye clothed me not. v 43  e). I was sick, and ye visited me not. v 43  f). I was in prison, and ye visited me not. v 43  D. These will be the results concerning the second coming of Christ. v 46  1. The wicked persons will be punished eternally.  2. The righteous people will be rewarded with everlasting life. CHAPTER 26 

I. THE PLOT TO KILL JESUS: VS 1-5 

A. This was the time of His crucifixion. vs 1-2 (The crucifixion of Christ would take place at the feast of the Passover.)  B. This was the plot of His crucifixion. vs 3-4 (The Jewish council gathered together so that they could plan a way to have Jesus crucified.)  C. This was the delay of His crucifixion. v 5 (The Jewish council did not want to have Jesus crucified at the Passover because they feared what the people might do.) II. JESUS WAS ANOINTED AT BETHANY: VS 6-13  A. This was the place of His anointment. v 6 (Jesus went to Bethany.)  B. This was the reality of His anointment. v 7 (A woman poured ointment upon the head of Jesus as He sat at meat.)  C. This was the indignation of His anointment. vs 8-9 (The disciples were angry because that ointment could have been sold for money and given unto the poor.)  D. This was the justification of His anointment. vs 10-13 (Jesus replied that she was anointing My body for My burial.) III. JUDAS AGREED TO SELL JESUS: VS 14-16  A. This was His scheme. v 14 (Judas went unto the chief Priest and planned his betrayal of Jesus.)  B. This was His price. v 15 (Judas sold his Lord for thirty pieces of silver.)  C. This was His plot. v 16 (Judas started looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.) IV. THE LAST PASSOVER FEAST: VS 17-19  A. This was the need for that last Passover feast. v 17 (Jesus and His disciples need to eat that last Passover feast.) Exod. 12:6,18  B. This was the place of that last Passover feast. v 18 (This last Passover feat occurred at a certain man's house.)  C. This was the preparation for that last Passover feast. v 19 (The disciples made preparation for that last Passover feast.) V. THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BETRAYAL: VS 20-25  A. This was the announcement of His betrayal. vs 20-21 (Jesus revealed that one of His apostles would betray Him.)  B. This was the response to His betrayal. v 22 (Each apostle asked, "Lord, is it I"?)  C. This was the answer to His betrayal. v 23 (The apostle who would dip his hand into the dish with Jesus would betray Him.)  D. This was the punishment for His betrayal. v 24 (It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.)  E. This was the exposure of His betrayal. v 25 (Judas asked, "Master is it I, and Jesus said unto him, thou hast said.") VI. THE INSTITUTION OF THE LORD'S SUPPER: VS 26-29  A. These are the contents of the Lord's supper. vs 26-29  1. The bread symbolizes His body. v 26  2. The cup (the fruit of the vine) symbolizes His blood. vs 27-29  B. This is the purpose of the Lord's supper. v 29 (The Lord's supper is in memory of His death, burial and resurrection.) VIII. THE DENIAL OF PETER IS FORETOLD: VS 30-35  A. This was the place of that statement. v 30 (This statement was revealed in the mount of Olives.)  B. This was the nature of that statement. vs 31-32 (Jesus revealed that all of His apostles would forsake Him.)  C. This was the response to that statement. v 33 (Peter affirmed that he would never forsake the Lord.)  D. This was the truth of that statement. v 34 (Jesus said that Peter would deny Him three time that very night.)  E. This was the confidence toward that statement. v 35 (Peter revealed that he would never deny the Lord.) VIII. THE AGONY OF JESUS IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE: VS 36-46  A. This was the awareness of His agony. vs 36-38 (Jesus revealed that His soul was very sad and deeply grieved.)  B. These were the ways of overcoming His agony. vs 39-46  1. Jesus prayed the first time for the will of God to be done. v 39  2. Jesus prayed the second time for the will of God to be done. v 42  3. Jesus prayed the third time for the will of God to be done. vs 44-46 IX. THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST OF JESUS: VS 47-56  A. This was the multitude who arrested Jesus. v 47 (A great multitude of people came with swords and staves to arrest Jesus.)  B. This was the sign for Jesus to be arrested. vs 48-49 (They were to arrest the person which Judas kissed.)  C. This was the arrest of Jesus. v 50 (They came and laid their hands on Jesus and took Him.)  1. This was the response to His arrest. vs 51-52 (One of the apostles fought for Jesus.)  2. This was the logic of His arrest. v 53 (Jesus could have called for Divine help.)  D. This was the purpose of his arrest. vs 54-56 (This was done to fulfill the scriptures.) Luke 24:44 X. JESUS BEFORE THE HIGH PRIEST: VS 57-68  A. This was the council. vs 57-59 (This was the council of the Sanhedrin court.)  B. This was the false charge. vs 60-61 (Many false witnesses testified against Jesus.)  C. This was the mandate. vs 62-63 (Jesus was to tell the council if He was the Christ the Son of God.)  D. This was the answer. v 64 (Jesus answer, "Thou hast said.")  E. This was the results. vs 65-68 (The council falsely found Jesus worthy of death.) XI. PETER DENIED JESUS: VS 69-75  A. This was his first denial of Jesus. vs 69-70  1. A damsel said that Peter was with Jesus of Galilee. v 69  2. Peter said, "I know not what thou sayest." v 70  B. This was his second denial of Jesus. vs 71-72  1. Another maid said that Peter was also with Jesus of Nazareth. v 71  2. Peter said, "I do not know the man." v 72  C. This was his third denial of Jesus. vs 73-74  1. Another person said of Peter that he was a disciple of Jesus because his speech betrayed him. v 73  2. Peter said, "I know not the man." v 74  D. This was the result of Peter's denial of Jesus. v 75 (Peter remembered the words of Jesus and wept bitterly.) CHAPTER 27 

I. THE SANHEDRIN COURT SENT JESUS TO PILATE: VS 1-2 

A. This was the nature of that conspiracy. v 1 (The Sanhedrin court wanted to put Jesus to death.)  B. This was the results of that conspiracy. v 2 (The enemies of Jesus led him away to Pontius Pilate so that they could secure their death wish because Pilate had to sign that sentence.) II. JUDAS KILLED HIMSELF: VS 3-10  A. These were the attitudes which Judas had toward himself. vs 3-5  1. This was his conviction. v 3 (When Judas saw that Jesus was condemned, he repented himself.)  2. This was his confession. v 4 (Judas said, "I have sinned because I have betrayed the innocent blood.")  3. This was his misery. v 5 (Judas gave back the thirty pieces of silver, and went out and hanged himself.)  B. These were the attitudes which the Jewish council had toward Judas. vs 6-7  1. This was their reasoning. v 6 (The Jewish council said that they could not put the money back into the treasury because it was blood money.)  2. This was their deed. v 7 (The Jewish council bought a potter's field to bury strangers in.)  C. This was the result of those deeds which were committed. vs 8-10 (This was done to fulfill prophecy.) Zech. 11:13 III. JESUS BEFORE PILATE: VS 11-14  A. This was the question which was asked. v 11 (Pilate asked Jesus, "Art thou the King of the Jews?")  B. This was the false accusation. v 12 (The chief priests and elders bought false charges against Jesus.)  C. These were the results of that situation. vs 13-14  1. Jesus did not answer those false charges. v 13  2. The silent of Jesus caused Pilate to marvel. v 14 IV. JESUS IS SENTENCED TO DIE: VS 15-26  A. The Jews were given a choice between Jesus and Barabbas. vs 15-18  1. It was a custom at the Jews Passover feast, that Pilate could release unto the people a prisoner of their choice. v 15  2. Pilate said unto the Jews "Shall I release unto Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ? vs 16-18  B. The Jews chose Barabbas instead of Jesus. vs 19-26  1. The enemies of Jesus persuaded the people to ask for Barabbas so that Jesus could be crucified. vs 19-21 a). Pilate asked what shall I do with Jesus? v 22 (The crowd said, "Let him be crucified.")  b). Pilate said, "Why, what evil hath he done?" v 23 (The crowd said, "Let him be crucified.")  c). Pilate said, "I am innocent of the blood of this just person." v 24 (The crowd said, "Let his blood be upon us, and upon our children.")  2. Pilate released Barabbas unto the enemies of Jesus so that he could delivered Jesus to be crucified. v 26 V. THE CRUCIFIXION: VS 27-44  A. This was the mockery before His crucifixion. vs 27-31 (The Roman soldier mocked Jesus in an unjust way.)  B. This was the place of His crucifixion. vs 32-36 (Jesus was crucified on a hill called Calvary.)  C. This was the superscription of His crucifixion. v 37 ("This is Jesus the King of the Jews.")  D. This was the humility of His crucifixion. v 38 (Jesus was crucified between two thieves.)  E. This was the mockery of His crucifixion. vs 39-44 (Jesus was mocked in the worst possible way.) VI. THE DEATH OF JESUS: VS 45-46  A. This was the cry of His death. vs 45-46  1. Jesus was dying physical because He had a physical body. Heb. 10:5, Romans 5:12  2. Jesus was dying Spiritually because He was our sin bearer on the cross. Isa. 59:1-2, John 1:29, 1 Peter 2:24, Heb. 2:9  B. These were the responses to His cry of death. vs 47-49  1. The people misunderstood His cry of death. vs 47-48, Hosea 4:12  2. The people acted unwisely concerning His cry of death. v 49, Romans 10:1-3  C. This was His death on the cross. v 50 (Jesus yielded up His Spirit unto death.) Rev. 1:18  D. These were the results of His death. vs 51-56  1. The law of Moses was terminated. v 51, Col. 2:14  2. Many graves were opened. vs 52-53  3. Many confessed that Jesus was the Son of God. vs 54-56 VII. THE ENTOMBMENT OF JESUS: VS 57-61  A. This was the request for His entombment. vs 57-58 (Joseph went to Pilate and begged for the body of Jesus so that he could bury it.)  B. This was the burial of Jesus. vs 59-60 (Joseph put the body of Jesus into his own new tomb.)  C. These were the witnesses of His entombment. v 61 (Mary Magdalene and the other Mary saw His entombment.) VIII. THE SEALING OF THE TOMB: VS 62-66  A. This was the request to seal the tomb. vs 62-64 (The chief priests and the Pharisees wanted Pilate to secure the tomb so that no person could steal the body of Jesus.)  B. This was the permission to seal the tomb. v 65 (Pilate said unto them, "You have a watch, go your way, make it as sure as you can.")  C. This was the act of sealing that tomb. v 66 (The tomb was sealed, and soldiers would guard the tomb.) CHAPTER 28 

I. THIS WAS THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD: VS 1-8 

A. This was the time of His resurrection. v 1 (Our Lord was raised from the grave upon the first day of the week: Sunday.)  B. These were the powers of His resurrection. vs 2-5  1. The power of God was demonstrated. Eph. 1:19-21  2. The power of God is demonstrated for us. Romans 6:3-7  C. These were the realities of His resurrection. v 6  1. The resurrection of Christ from the grave is a fact. 1 Cor. 15:1-9  2. The resurrection of Christ from the grave makes each person accountable unto God. Acts 17:30-31  D. These are the blessings of His resurrection. vs 7-8  1. The resurrection of our Lord from the grave brings us salvation from our sins. 2 Cor. 5:17, Eph. 1:3  2. The resurrection of our Lord from the grave is our only hope for happiness. 1 Cor. 15:12-20 II. THIS WAS THE APPEARANCE OF OUR RISEN LORD: VS 9-10  A. This was the reality of His appearance. v 9 (Jesus appeared unto His disciples.)  B. This was His commandment which was given. v 10 (The other disciples of Jesus were to meet Him in Galilee.) III. THIS WAS THE FALSE REPORT CONCERNING THE RISEN LORD: VS 11-15  A. This was the report. v 11 (The soldiers came into the city and reported all things unto the chief priests.)  B. This was the bribery. v 12 (The council gave unto the soldiers large money so that they could keep silent.)  C. This was the lie. vs 13-14 (The soldiers were to say that the disciple stole the body of Jesus while they were asleep.)  D. This was the results. v 15 (This act was commonly known unto the Jews.) IV. OUR RISEN LORD GIVES THE GREAT COMMISSION: VS 16-20  A. This is the authority of Christ. vs 16-18 (Our Lord has all power and all authority in heaven and in earth for the purpose of redeeming sinful man.)  B. These are the commandments of Christ. vs 19-20  1. Christians must convert the lost people of the world. v 19  2. Disciples must teach the converted how to stay converted. v 20  C. This is the promise of Christ. v 20 (Our Lord will be with us always even until the end of this world.)
