I. THE JUDGMENT OF THE GOSPEL DISPENSATION: VS 1-10

I. THE JUSTIFICATION OF ABRAHAM: VS 1-12 

A. These were the methods of his justification. vs 1-3  1. Abraham was not justified by the works of circumcision. vs 1-2  2. Abraham was justified by his faith in the gospel system. v 3, Gen. 12:1-3, Gal. 3:6-8  B. These are the reasons for his justification. vs 4-5  1. Abraham did not seek justification by the works of circumcision. v 4  2. Abraham did seek justification by his faith in the gospel system. v 5  C. These are the blessedness of his justification. vs 6-8  1. The Lord forgave Abraham of his sins. Psa. 32:1-2  2. The Lord must forgive sins so that a person can be justified. Heb. 8:10-12  D. These are the effects of his justification. vs 9-11  1. Abraham was justified before the law of circumcision was given. vs 9-10  2. These are the negative qualities of that justification. vs 13-15  a). Christians are not justified by the law of Moses. v 13  b). The law of Moses was not given for any justification. vs 14-15  2. These are the positive qualities of that justification. vs 16-21  a). Christians are justified by the gospel system. v 16  b). The gospel plan of salvation was promised to Abraham instead of the law of Moses. vs 17-22 1). Abraham was to be the father of all the faithful people of God. v 17 2). Abraham had to believe in the gospel plan of salvation. vs 18-22 (Abraham had to believe in the coming of the gospel system; whereas, we as Christians must believe in the establishment of the gospel plan of salvation. The tribulations of a Christian must perfect his patience. v 3, James 1:2-4  2. The patience of a saint should mature his experiences. v 4, 2 Tim 2:12  3. I. THE NEW LIFE: VS 1-4 

A. These are the reasons for that new life. vs 1-2  1. Saints are forbidden to live in sin. vs 1-2, Romans 6:12  2. Christians are dead to sin. v 2, Col. 3:1-4  B. These are the causes of that new life. v 3  1. We as alien sinners were baptized into Christ. Gal. 3:27  2. We as Christians are crucified with Christ. Gal. 2:20  C. These are the essentials for that new life. v 4  1. Christians must walk in the newness of life. 1 John 2:15-17  2. Saints need to walk by faith. 2 Cor. 5:7  3. Brethren ought to walk circumspectly. Eph. 5:15  4. Disciples should be Christ-like. 1 John 2:6 II. THE NEW MAN: VS 5-11  A. These are the reasons for that new man. vs 5-7  1. Christians are receiving a new life from God. v 5, 2 Cor. 5:18-21  2. Disciples are free from the enslavement of sin. vs 6-7, Heb. 8:12  a). Our old body of sin was destroyed when we were being baptized into Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17, Gal. 3:27  b). Our new man is free from the enslavement of sin. 1 John 1:7-9  B. These are the essentials for that new man. v 8  1. Christians must die to their old life of sin because Christ died for their sins. v 8, 2 Tim. 2:21  2. Saints must live with Christ because they are died to sin. v 8, Gal. 2:20  C. These are the blessings for that new man. vs 9-10  1. Spiritual dead does not have any power over the new man. 2 Tim. 1:10  a). Christ is the source of eternal life. John 14:6  b). Eternal life is a conditional promise. Rom. 2:7, Rev. 2:10  2. Physical death can not destroy the new man. Rom. 14:7-9, 2 Cor. 5:1-2  D. These are the attitudes of that new man. v 11  1. The new man knows that he is dead to the enslavement of sin. Romans 12:1-2  2. The new man knows that he is alive unto the services of God. Matt. 4:10 III. THE SERVICES OF A CHRISTIAN: VS 12-14  A. These are the characteristics of a Christian. v 12  1. A Christian does not let sins rule in his mortal body. v 12  2. A disciple makes his body to rule over the powers of sin. Gen. 4:1-8  B. These are the requirements for being a Christian. v 13  1. A Christian must not use his bodily members as instruments for sin. v 13  a). The eyes should not be lustful. 2 Peter. 2:14  b). The ears ought not to be dull of hearing. Matt. 13:15-16  c). The mouth ought not speak lies. Romans 3:13-15  d). The hand can not steal. Eph. 4:28  e). The feet should not shed blood. Romans 3:15  2. A disciple must use his bodily members as instruments for righteousness. v 13  a). The eyes ought to have spiritual vision. Heb. 12:1-2  b). The ears should hear the needs of the people. Acts 16:9  c). The mouth must preach the truth. Acts 20:26-27  d). The hands need to minister unto the needy. Gal. 6:10  e). The feet ought to carry the gospel to other people. Romans 10:15  C. These are the blessings for being a Christian. v 14  1. Christians are not enslaved to the powers of sin. 1 John 4:4  2. Saints are overcoming the powers of sin. Phil. 4:13  D. These are the reasons for being a Christian. v 14  1. Disciples are not under the law of Moses. Col. 2:14  2. Christians are under the law of grace. John 1:17 IV. THE SERVANT OF GOD: ROMANS 6:15-19 A. These are the mandates for being a servant of God. v 15  1. A servant of God can not live in sin. Matt. 6:24  2. A servant of God must live for righteousness. Matt. 6:33  B. These are the volitions for being a servant of God. v 16  1. A person can be a servant of sin. Josh. 24:14-15  2. A person can become a servant of righteousness. Heb. 5:8-9  C. These are the reasons for being a servant of God. vs 16-17  1. A servant of God has obeyed the gospel plan of salvation. 2 Thess. 1:7-9 2. The Lord has added him to the New Testament church. Acts 2:47  D. These are motivations for being a servant of God. v 19  1. A servant of God knows that the old life of sin which he once lived was enough for him. 1 Peter 4:2-3  2. A servant of God knows that the new life of righteousness which he is now living is rewarding for him. Matt. 5:6 V. SERVING GOD: ROMANS 6:20-23  A. These are the reasons for serving God. vs 20-21  1. The sinner is enslaved to sin. v 20, Gen. 6:5  2. The sinner is living a shameful life. v 21, Gen. 3:10  3. The sinner must die spiritually. v 21, Matt. 10:28, Rev. 21:8  B. I. THE LAW OF MOSES: ROMANS 7:1-3 

A. These were the legal claims of the law of Moses. v 1  1. The law of Moses had power over a man while he lived.  2. The law of Moses had power over a man while it was in authority.  B. These were the illustrations of the law of Moses. v 2  1. The woman is bound by law to her husband as long as her husband lives.  2. The woman is free by the law to her husband when he dies.  C. These were the effects of the law of Moses. v 3  1. The law of Moses has been terminated. Col. 2:14  2. The law of Christ has fulfilled the law of Moses. Matt. 5:17, Luke 24:44-48 II. OUR UNION WITH CHRIST: ROMANS 7:4-6  A. These are the characteristics for that union with Christ. v 4  1. Christians are dead to the law of Moses because the power of the gospel makes them free from all other laws. Romans 1:16, Gal. 5:1-2, 2 Cor. 5:17  2. Saints are spiritually married to Christ. John 4:24  3. Saints should be converted to the law of the gospel, and to the spirit of the gospel. 2 Cor. 3:6 III. THE POWERS OF SIN: ROMANS 7:7-12  A. These are the revelations of sin. v 7  1. The law of Moses revealed the nature of sin. Exod. 20:14, Deut. 5:18-21  2. The law of Christ explains the nature of sin. 1 John 3:4  B. These are the influences of sin. v 8  1. All persons have sinned. Romans 3:10, 21  2. Christians will also sin against God because of the weakness of the flesh. 1 John 1:8-10  C. These are the effects of sin. vs 9-12  1. Sin separates a person from his God. v 9, Isa. 59:1-2  2. Sin causes a person to die in a spiritual way. v 10, Rev. 21:8  3. Sin will deceive any person who live in it. v 11, Heb. 3:13, Heb. 11:23-26  4. Sin can overpower the laws of God for a short period of time. v 12, John 8:44 IV. THE GREAT CONFLICT OF LIFE: ROMANS 7:13-20  A. These are the traits of that conflict of life. vs 13-16  1. The power of sin withstands the power of righteousness. vs 13-14  a). The power of sin are revealed. v 13, 1 John 3:8  b). The power of sin has influenced all mankind. v 14, Romans 3:10,23  2. The power of righteousness withstands the power of sin. vs 15-16  a). The power of righteousness has influenced mankind. v 15, Jude 3  b). The power of righteousness has been revealed. v 16, 2 Peter 1:3-4  B. These are the effects of that conflict of life. vs 17-18  1. The power of sin can control us. v 17, Romans 6:12-13  2. The power of righteousness can control us. v 18, Romans 12:1-2  C. These are the results of that conflict of life. vs 19-20  1. Each person is responsible for his own acts and deeds. 2 Cor. 5:10  2. Each person will receive a just recompense of reward. Heb. 2:1-3 V. THE VICTORY FOR THE SAINTS: ROMANS 7:21-25  A. These are the oppositions to that victory. v 21  1. The devil desires to tempt us. James 1:2-4  2. There is a great conflict between good and evil. Gal. 5:17  B. These are the ways to achieve that victory. v 22  1. Christians should delight in the law of God. Psa. 1:1-3  2. Disciples need to know the scriptures. John 5:39, 2 Tim. 2:15  3. I. THE SPIRITUAL LIFE: ROMANS 8:1-4 

A. These are the conditions for that spiritual life. v 1  1. A Christian must be in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17, Gal. 3:27  2. A disciple should not walk after the flesh. Gal. 5:19-21  3. A saint needs to walk after the spirit. Gal. 5:22-23  B. These are the reasons for that spiritual life. vs 2-4  1. The gospel has made us free from the law of Moses. Col. 2:14  a). The law of Moses was insufficient to save us. v 3, Gal. 2:16  b). The law of Moses was fulfilled by the redemptive work of Christ. vs 3-4, Luke 24:44-48  2. The gospel has made us free from the enslavement of sin. 1 Cor. 15:57 II. THE TWO LIVES: ROMANS 8:5-8  A. These are the characteristics of those two lives. v 5  1. The carnal life is governed by the flesh. v 5, Gal. 5:19-21  2. The spiritual life is governed by the Spirit. v 5, Gal. 5:22-23  B. These are the rewards for those two lives. v 6  1. The carnal life engenders spiritual death. v 6, Gal. 6:6-9  2. The spiritual life promotes eternal life. v 6, Romans 2:7  C. These are the effects of those two lives. vs 7-8  1. The carnal life does not please God. Rev. 3:15-20  2. The spiritual life does please God. Rev. 3:4 III. THE NEW LIFE: ROMANS 8:9-11  A. These are the blessings of that new life. v 9  1. Christians are not living after the works of the flesh. John 3:1-7  2. Disciples are living after the things of the spirit. Col. 3:1-4  B. These are the requirements for that new life. v 9  1. The Spirit of God must dwell in us. 1 Cor. 3:16-17  2. The Spirit of Christ must dwell in us. Phil. 2:5-9  C. These are the reasons for that new life. v 10  1. We as Christians must dwell in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17, Gal. 3:27  2. Christ must dwell in us. Gal. 2:20  D. These are the effects of that new life. v 10  1. Our bodies are dead to the services of sin. Romans 6:12-13  2. Our bodies are alive in the services to God. 1 Cor. 6:19-20  E. These are the powers of that new life. v 11  1. Christians are led by the Spirit of God. John 16:13  2. Disciples are free from the enslavement of sin. 2 Peter 2:14 IV. THE REGENERATION OF SONSHIP: ROMANS 8:12-17  A. These are the obligations of our sonship. v 12  1. Christians are not obligated to the physical life. Gal. 6:6-9  2. Disciples are indebted to the spiritual life. Matt. 6:19-21  B. These are the reasons for our sonship. v 13  1. If we as Christians live by physical standards, we will die spiritually. 2 Thess. 1:7-9  2. If we as disciples live by spiritual standards, we will live spiritually. Romans 2:7  C. These are the conditions for our sonship. v 14  1. Christians must be led by the Spirit of God. 2 Peter 1:20-21  2. Saints should be governed by the laws of God. 2 Tim. 3:16-17  D. These are the blessings of our sonship. v 15  1. Christians are not regenerated for the spirit of fear. 2 Tim. 1:7  2. Disciples are redeemed for the spirit of adoption. 1 John 4:17-19  E. This will be the results of our sonship. v 17  1. Disciples are the heirs of God. Rev. 3:12  2. Christians are joint-heirs with Christ. John 10:10, Rev. 1:18 V. OUR FUTURE GLORY: ROMANS 8:18-25  A. These are the assurances for our future glory. v 18  1. Christians are the glory of God. 1 Cor. 12:7  2. Disciples are called to God's eternal glory. 1 Peter 5:10  B. These are the reasons for our future glory. vs 19-21  1. The physical body can not inherit the Kingdom of God. vs 19-21, 1 Cor. 15:50-57  2. The physical body desires to become a spiritual body. v 22, 2 Cor. 5:1-4  C. These are the blessings of our future glory. v 23  1. Christians will be given a spiritual body beyond the grave. Phil. 3:21  2. Saints will live eternally beyond the grave. 1 Cor. 15:49  D. These are the motivations for our future glory. vs 24-25  1. Christians are living in hope of eternal life. Heb. 6:18-19  2. Disciples are striving to do the will of God. Romans 2:7 VI. THE BLESSINGS OF CHRISTIANITY: ROMANS 8:26-30  A. These are the sources of those blessings of Christianity. vs 26-27  1. Christians have been given the Holy Spirit as a gift. Acts 2:38, Eph. 1:13- 14  2. The Holy Spirit makes intercession for the saints. vs 26-27  B. These are the assurances for those blessings of Christianity. v 28  1. God does work for our good. Phil. 2:12-13  2. God does give us His Divine Providence. Prov. 3:5-6  C. These are the reasons for those blessings of Christianity. v 29  1. Christians have been born again. John 3:1-7  2. Disciples are following the examples of Christ. 1 Peter 2:21  D. These are the effects of those blessings of Christianity. v 30  1. Christians are justified by the gospel system. Romans 1:16  2. Saints will be glorified. Romans 2:7 VII. THE SECURITY OF THE SAINTS: ROMANS 8:31-39  A. These are the assurances of that security of the saints. V 31  1. God is for the saints. Phil. 2:13  2. God can not be overthrown. Acts 5:39  B. These are the sources of that security of the saints. vs 32-33  1. The gifts of God brings us security. v 31, Matt. 6:33  2. The works of God engenders stability. v 33, 1 Cor. 15:58  C. These are the reasons for that security of the saints. v 34  1. God does work through Christ to redeem the sinners. 2 Cor. 5:18-21  2. God does rule our own redeemed nature of life in Christ. Col. 2:9-10  D. These are the oppositions for that security of the saints. vs 35-36  1. Christians must suffer for Christ. v 35, 2 Tim. 3:12  2. Saints can overcome their oppositions. vs 38-39, Isa. 41:10
