CHAPTER 9 

I. THE ISRAELITES: VS 1-5

These were the Privileges of the Israelites. vs 4-5  1. The Israelites had been adopted by God as a nation. v 4, Exod. 4:22, Hos. 11:1  2. These were the traits of a true Israelite. vs 6-9  1. All of the descendants of Abraham were not true Israelites because the children of Ishmael were not chosen to bring Christ into the world. vs 6-7, Gal. 4:30-31  2. The children of promise were the true Israelites because the children of Isaac were chosen to bring Christ into the world. vs 8-9, Gal. 4:28  B. The created should not question the redemptive works of God. Acts 7:51- 60  2. The created should alway accept the redemptive works of God. Heb. 5:8- 9  B. These are the characteristics of the redemptive work of God. v 21  1. All created persons, who have reached the age of accountability, have sinned against God. Romans 3:21  2. The Lord did demonstrate His mercy to those people in the Old Testament. Psa. 103:11  C. These are the purposes of the redemptive work of God. vs 23-26  1. THE ISRAELITES REJECTED THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST: VS 27-33  A. This is a prophecy concerning those Israelites who would reject the gospel of Christ. vs 27-29  1. The majority of the Israelites would reject the gospel. Isa. 1:9  2. The majority of the Jews did reject the gospel. Acts 13:44-46  B. These are the reasons why Israel rejected the gospel of Christ. vs 30-33  1. Those Israelites were seeking righteousness by the law of Moses. vs 30- 31, Gal. 3:10  2. I. ISRAEL REJECTED THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST: VS 1-4 

A. This was the state of the nation of Israel. v 1  1. Israel was lost because Paul prayed for their lost condition.  2. Christians should pray for those persons who are lost. 1 Tim. 2:1-4  B. This was the hope for the nation of Israel. v 1  1. Paul desired that Israel should be saved.  2. Christians should desire that those persons who are lost might be saved. James 5:19-20  C. These were the reasons why Israel was lost. vs 2-4  1. Israel had more zeal than knowledge. v 2, Matt. 7:21-23  2. Israel had established their own system of righteousness. v 3, Jer. 10:23  3. Israel failed to obey the gospel because they preached a perverted gospel. v 3, Gal. 1:6-9  4. Israel failed to see that the law of Moses had been fulfilled. v 4, Col. 2:14 II. ETERNAL SALVATION: VS 5-13  A. These are the methods of that eternal salvation. vs 5-7  1. Disciples are not saved by the law of Moses. v 5, Col. 2:14  2. Christians are saved by the gospel of Christ. vs 6-7, Romans 1:16  B. These are the terms of that eternal salvation vs 8-9  1. We as alien sinners must believe the word of God. v 8, Heb. 11:6  2. We as alien sinners need to confess the Deity of Christ. v 9, Matt. 10:32- 33  3. We as alien sinners should repent of our past sins. Luke 13:3  4. We as alien sinners ought to believe in the resurrection of Christ. v 9, 1 Cor. 15:12-17  a). We as alien sinners must obey a form of our Lord's death, burial and resurrection from the grave. Romans 6:16-18  b). We as alien sinners need to be buried with our Lord in baptism so that we can be raised to walk in the newness of life. Romans 6:1-6  C. These are the reasons for that eternal salvation. v 10  1. Our heart believes the gospel plan of salvation. Heb. 11:6  2. Our mouth speaks as the oracles of God. 1 Peter 4:11  D. These are the traits of that eternal salvation. vs 11-12  1. All persons can be saved. Acts 10:34-35  2. The Lord will save those people who are willing to accept His terms of salvation. Rev. 22:17  E. These are the blessings of that eternal salvation. vs 12-13  1. Christians are saved from their past sins. Heb. 8:13  2. Disciples can call upon the Lord for His Divine help. Heb. 13:5-6 III. AN OBEDIENT FAITH: VS 14-17  A. These are the needs for an obedient faith. v 14  1. Christians can not please God without faith. Heb. 11:6  2. Disciples can not call upon God without faith. Jer. 10:23  B. These are the beginnings of an obedient faith. v 15  1. The preaching of the gospel engenders faith. 1 Cor. 1:18-24  2. Studying the word of God produces faith. 2 Tim. 2:15  C. These are the mandates for an obedient faith. v 16  1. An obedient faith demands total obedience. 2 Thess. 1:7-9  2. This was the assurance that Israel was accountability unto God. v 19  1. The Israelites were provoke to jealousy by their traditions. Acts 10:34-35  2. I. THE GRACE OF GOD: VS 1-6 

A. These are the characteristics of His grace. v 1  1. God did not cast away His obedient people. 2 Tim. 1:12  2. God will not forget our obedience to His will. Rev. 14:13  B. These are the realities of His grace. vs 2-4  1. God did save those persons who were obedient to His will. 2 Kings 2:1- 11  2. God will save those persons who are obedient to His will. Rev. 2:10  C. These are the blessings of His grace. v 5  1. The grace of God did save Paul. 2 Tim. 4:6-8  2. The grace of God will save us. James 1:12  D. These are the ways to receive His grace. v 6  1. The grace of God can not be earned. Eph. 2:8-9  2. The grace of God is a free gift. Titus 2:11-12 II. THE REBELLION OF ISRAEL: VS 7-11  A. This was the proof of their rebellion. v 7  1. Israel did not obtain that for which they were seeking. v 7  2. The sinner can not obtain the fulfillment of his life. Heb. 11:25  B. This was the reason for their rebellion. v 8  1. Israel had the spirit of slumber. v 8  2. Christians could have the spirit of slumber. Eph. 5:14-16  C. These were the curses for their rebellion. vs 9-10  1. The teachings of the Israelites became a trap for them. v 9, Matt. 15:8-9  2. The Israelites were enslaved by false teachings. v 10, 2 Peter 2:1-3  D. These were the results of their rebellion. v 11  1. Salvation was extended to the Gentiles to provoke them to jealousy.  2. God is no respecter of persons. Acts 10:34-35 III. THE RECONCILIATION OF ISRAEL: VS 12-16  A. This was the need for their reconciliation. v 12  1. Israel had fallen from the grace of God.  2. We as alien sinners have fallen from the grace of God. Romans 6:23, 2 Cor. 5:17-21  B. This was the way by which they could have been reconciled to God. vs 13- 14  1. The Israelites should have know the purpose of the gospel. 1 Cor. 15:1- 4  2. Christians must know the purpose of the gospel. Romans 1:16  C. These would have been the effects of their reconciliation. vs 15-16  1. The Israelites would have become new creatures in Christ. v 15, 2 Cor. 5:17  2. The Israelites would have become holy in their character. v 16, 1 Peter 1:15-16 IV. PRODUCING FRUIT: VS 17-24  A. These are the ways of producing fruit. v 17  1. Many of the Israelites were cut off from having fellowship with God.  2. Many of the Gentiles were grafted into a good olive tree.  B. These are the mandates for producing fruit. vs 18-20  1. Disciples can not boast about their fruits. v 18, John 15:1-8  2. Christians must be humble in producing their fruits. vs 19-20, 1 Cor. 10:13  C. These are the reasons for producing fruit. vs 21-22  1. God will punish those persons who disobey His will. Heb. 2:1-4  1. God will bless those persons who obey His will. Matt. 6:33  D. These are the sources for producing fruit. vs 23-24  1. Producing fruit comes from God's help. Isa. 41:10  2. Producing fruit comes from God's power. 1 Peter 1:3-5 V. THE MERCY OF GOD: VERSES 25-32  A. This is the need for God's mercy. Verse 26  1. Israel had rejected the mercy of God.  2. Christians can reject the mercy of God. Heb. 12:28-29  B. This is the extent of his mercy. Verse 25  1. God would have extended His mercy to Israel.  2. God will extend His mercy unto us. Heb. 8:12  C. This is the way of receiving his mercy. Verses 27-28  1. Israel could have receive His mercy through the gospel system.  2. Christians must receive His mercy through the gospel system. Verse 30-32, Matt. 11:28-30 VI. THE WISDOM OF GOD: VERSES 33-36  A. These are the traits of His wisdom. Verse 33  1. The ways of God are unsearchable. Verse 33  2. God gives the Christians the wisdom which they need in life. James 1:5-8 B. These are the proofs of His wisdom. Verse 34  1. No person has been His Counselor.  2. Christians can not be His Counselor. 1 Cor. 2:15-16  C. These are the demonstrations of His wisdom. vs 35-36  1. God has the knowledge to do all things.  2. God has given unto us the knowledge which we need in life. 2 Peter 1:3 CHAPTER 12 

I. THE SERVICE OF A CHRISTIAN: VERSES 1-2 

A. These are the appeals for that service. Verse 1  1. We as Christians are beseeched by the mercies of God to serve Him. Psa. 114:1-4  2. We as disciples need the mercies of God. Heb. 8:11-12  B. These are the characteristics of that service. Verse 1  1. Christians are to give God the services of their bodies. 1 Cor. 6:19-20 2. Disciples are to serve God with a sinless body. Romans 6:12-13  C. These are the requirements for that service. Verse 1  1. The service which we give unto God must be a holy service. 1 Peter 2:9  2. The service which we give unto God must be an acceptable service. 1 Peter 2:5  D. These are the motivations for that service. Verse 1  1. The service which we give unto God should not be a grievous service. 1 John 5:3  2. The service which we give unto God is a reasonable service. 1 Cor. 10:13  E. These are the accomplishments of that service. Verse 2  1. Christians must not be conformed to this world. Col. 3:1-4  2. Saints must be transformed from the world. 1 John 2:15-17 II. WORKING FOR THE CHURCH: VS 3-8  A. These are the reasons for that work. vs 3-5  1. Christians are to do good in that service. v 3, 1 Cor. 15:58  2. Disciples are members of the Church. vs 4-5, Acts 2:47  B. These are the traits of that work. v 6  1. Christians have different talents. Matt. 25:14-30  2. The elders must rule with diligence. v 8, 1 Peter 5:1-4 III. THE SERVICES OF A CHRISTIANS: VS 9-13  A. These are the goals for that service. vs 9-11  1. Love is the great commandment. Matt. 22:36-40  2. Love must be freely given. 1 Cor. 13:4-7  B. These are the motivations for that service. v 12  1. Christians must rejoice in hope. Heb. 6:18-19  2. Disciples should be patient in tribulation. James 1:2-4  3. Saints ought to be instant in prayer. 2 Thess. 5:17  D. These are the requirements for that service. v 13  1. Christians must give to the necessities of the saints. James 2:14-16  2. Disciples need to give themselves to hospitality. Heb. 13:1-2 IV. THE DUTIES OF A CHRISTIANS: VS 14-21  A. A brother in Christ blesses his persecutors v 14, Matt. 5:43-45  B. A saint has the proper attitude towards other people. v 15, Romans 13:10  C. A disciple is humble in his dealings in life. v 16, 1 Peter 5:6  D. A Christians provides things honest in the sight of all men. v 17, Eph. 4:28  E. A saint tries to live peaceable with all men. v 18, Matt. 5:9  F. A disciple does not try to avenge himself. vs 19-21, 1 Peter 3:9 CHAPTER 13 

I. THE CIVIL GOVERNMENT: VS 1-7 

A. These are the characteristics of civil governments. v 1  1. God has authorized civil governments. v 1  2. God blesses those nations which respect His authority. Prov. 14:34  B. These are the requirements of civil governments. 2  1. Christians must honor those persons who are in civil government. 1 Peter 2:17  2. Disciples must obey the laws of their country providing that those laws do not conflict with the laws of God. Acts 5:24-29  C. These are the reasons for civil governments. vs 3-4  1. The law officer should punish the evil doer. v 3  2. The law office should protect the law abiding citizen. v 4  D. These are our duties toward civil governments. vs 5-7  1. Christians must honor those persons who have the powers over them. Titus 3:1  2. Disciples must support those persons who have the powers over them. 1 Peter 2:13 II. THE DEBT OF LOVE: VS 8-10  A. These are the traits of love. v 8 1 Love is a debt which we owe to the Lord, our neighbor and our self. Matt. 22:36-40  2. Love has the greatest of all qualities. 1 Cor. 13:4-7  B. These are the reasons for love. v 8  1. Love fulfills the laws of God. John 15:10-12  2. Love causes a person to keep the commandments of God. 1 John 5:3  C. These are the blessings of love. vs 9-10  1. Love will not harm our neighbor. v 9  2. Love will work good for our neighbor. v 10 III. THE SPIRITUAL AWAKING: VS 11-14  A. These are the needs for our own spiritual awaking. v 11  1. It is high time for disciples to awake out of their spiritual sleep. Eph. 5:14- 17  2. The Lord demands that Christians be watchful. Rev. 3:1-2  B. These are reasons for our own spiritual awaking. v 11  1. Our eternal salvation is drawing near. Heb. 9:27  2. Our journey upon the earth is short. James 4:13-17  C. These are the essentials for our own spiritual awaking. v 12  1. Christians must cast off the works of darkness. Eph. 5:8  2. Saints must put on the armor of light. Matt. 5:14-16  D. These are the effects of our own spiritual awaking. vs 13-14  1. Disciples would not be walking in the pathway of sin. v 13, 1 John 3:8  2. Christians would be walking in the pathway of righteousness. v 14, I John 1:7-9 CHAPTER 14 

I. THE WEAK AND THE STRONG CHRISTIAN: VS 1-6 

A. These are the differences between those two Christians. vs 1-2  1. The weak Christian believes that he can only eat vegetables: not meat.  2. The strong Christian believes that he can eat all kinds of meat. 1 Tim. 4:1-5  B. These are the requirements for those two Christians. vs 3-4  1. The weak Christian must not judge the strong Christian. Matt. 7:1-5  2. The strong Christian should not judge the weak Christian. James 4:11-12  C. These are the attitudes of those two Christians. vs 5-6  1. The weak Christian esteems one day above another day.  2. The strong Christian esteems each day alike. II. THE FACTS WHICH CONCERNS LIFE AND DEATH: VS 7-9  A. These are the purposes of life. vs 7-8  1. The purpose of created life is to glorify the Lord. Acts 17:24-27  2. The purpose of redeemed life is to glorify the Lord. 2 Cor. 6:14-18  B. These are the purposes of death. v 8  1. The purpose of physical death does glorify the Lord. Psa. 116:15, Psa. 23:1-6, Phil. 1:21  2. The purpose of spiritual death does not glorify the Lord. Matt. 25:41, 2 Thess. 1:7-9, Ezek. 33:11  C. This is the One who has the power of life and death. v 9  1. The Lord has power over life. John 11:25, John 10:10, 2 Tim. 1:10  2. The Lord has power over death. John 5:28-29, Rev. 1:18 III. THE COMING JUDGMENT: VS 10-12  A. These are the realities of that judgment. v 10  1. Christians must be judged for the deeds which they have done. Eccles. 12:13-14  2. Saints must be judged by Christ. Acts 17:30-31, 2 Cor. 5:10  B. These are the characteristics of that judgment. v 11  1. Every knee shall bow to the Lord. Heb. 2:1-3  2. Every tongue shall confess the Deity of Christ the Lord. Phil. 2:5-11  C. These are the reasons for that coming judgment. v 12  1. That judgment will be a matter of reaping that what we have sown. Gal. 6:6-9  2. That judgment will be a matter of spiritual life or spiritual death. IV. THE INFLUENCE OF A CHRISTIAN: VS 13-18  A. These are the mandates for being a Christian. vs 13-15  1. Christians should not judge one another. Matt. 7:1-5  2. Disciples ought not to cause their brother to stumble. 1 Cor. 8:9  3. Saints must not destroy their brethren with their strong beliefs. Gal. 6:1-2  B. These are the reasons for being a Christian. v 16  1. Saints should not glory in evil influence. 1 Cor. 5:6, Gal. 5:13-14  2. Christians should glory in the fact that they are a Christian. 1 Peter 4:16  C. These are the blessings for being a Christian. v 7  1. The Kingdom of God is not a social kingdom. John 18:36  2. The Kingdom of God is a spiritual Kingdom. Matt. 6:33  3. The Kingdom of God rules in our hearts. Luke 17:20-21  D. These are the results for being a Christian. v 18  1. A disciple is accepted by God. Rev. 14:13  2. A Christian is also accepted by most men. Matt. 5:14-16 V. THE SELF-SACRIFICING SERVICE: VS 19-23  A. These are the essentials for self-sacrifice. v 19  1. Saints should follow after the things that make for peace. Matt. 5:9  2. Christians must follow after the things that will edify each other. Gal. 5:15  B. These are the reasons for self-sacrifice. vs 20-23  1. Christians should give up the thing that would cause other persons to stumble. vs 20-21; Gal. 5:13-14  2. Saints must do good to all people. vs 22-23, Gal. 6:10 CHAPTER 15 

I. HELPING OTHER PEOPLE: VS 1-6 

A. These are the commandments for helping other people. vs 1-2  1. The stronger Christian must help the weaker Christian. v 1  2. The Christian, whether he be weak or strong, must edify his neighbor. v 2 B. These are the reasons for helping other people. vs 3-4  1. Our Lord has helped other people. v 3, Heb. 5:14-16  2. The people of God have always helped each other. v 3, Psa. 69:3  C. These are the blessings for helping other people. v 5  1. God helps us to help other people. Romans 8:31, Phil. 2:13  2. Christ helps us to help other people. Phil. 4:13  D. These would be the results for helping each other people. v 6  1. Christians would be united. 1 Cor. 1:10  2. Saints would glorify the Lord. Phil. 1:21-24 II. RECEIVING ONE ANOTHER: VS 7-13  A. These are the commandments for receiving one another. v 7  1. Saints are commanded to receive one another. Heb. 13:1-2  2. Christians are commanded to love one another. John 14:14  B. These are the reasons for receiving one another. vs 8-12  1. Jesus Christ received the Jews. v 8, John 1:10-12  2. Jesus Christ received the Gentiles. vs 9-12, Psa. 18:49, Deut. 32:43, Psa. 117:1, Isa. 11:1-10  C. These would be the results of receiving one another. v 13  1. The Holy Spirit would be helping each brother in Christ. Romans 8:26 III. THE LABOR OF PAUL: VS 14-21  A. These were the motivations for his labors. vs 14-16  1. Paul had confidence in other people. v 14, Col. 3:16  2. Paul wanted to save other people. vs 15-16, Ezek. 3:18-19  B. This was the reason for his labors. v 17  1. Paul labors for God brought him happiness. v 17  2. Our labors for God will bring us happiness. 1 Cor. 15:58  C. This was the success of his labors. v 18  1. Christ was empowering Paul.  2. Christ will empower us. Phil. 4:13  D. This was the purpose of his labors. v 19  1. Paul fully preached the gospel of Christ.  2. Each Christian should fully preach the gospel of Christ. 1 Cor. 2:1-5  E. This was the fruit of his labors. vs 20-21  1. Paul wanted other people to hear the good new of the gospel. vs 20-21  2. Saints should the same desire for other people to hear the gospel. Luke 24:44-47 IV. THE PLANS OF PAUL: VS 22-26  A. Paul had a desire to visit Rome. vs 22-24  B. Paul was delayed in visiting Rome. vs 25-27  C. Paul revealed his plans to come to Rome. vs 28-29 V. THE REQUEST OF PAUL: VS 20-33  A. Paul asked for the prayers of other Christians. v 30  B.
