Why are you trusting your soul to something so bad?

This is actually a conversation between myself and someone about the Modern Literal Version who said "my NIV reads..." This describes the mentally I have seen for over 20 years from devout NIV followers. I edited out the translation discussion not relevant here or make the section below 'out of context'.

ME: The NIV is a paraphrase.

HIM:
Well, there are some great debates on this subject.

Let me start by saying I believe the Holy Spirit leads each us to understanding of Scripture in the way and at the level we are each capable of understanding at any given time.

If that is right, then it is entirely possible for 2 Christians to have different understanding of scripture and both be right.

And following that idea, I suspect that pronouncements that another's understanding of scripture are wrong can and do run some danger or blaspheming the HS.

That said - my understanding (which is shocking to some Christians, but which results from prayer, thought and attempts at discernment):

Personally, I don't try to read the Bible "literally." Some think the phrase "word of God" means "Dictation by God." I think it means "word ABOUT God:" that is, man's words on man's paper trying to tell us in human language what the God who surpasses our understanding is.

I try to read several translations on any given point and let the Holy Spirit guide me to understanding.

This is the kind of Christian the NIV produces. A believe that is in the washed down indoctrinated Word of Man but not in the Bible anywhere.  If he was correct in his thinking, why does he read the Bible at all?  The Holy Spirit is working directly on his thoughts and therefore his actions who needs the Book?
